A journey of her own
Meredith Whitmore has never travelled before. Let alone run away.
Now she is bound for Scotland, with a letter of introduction, her cat, and the rather alarming freedom to decide what happens next. She needs a position, a respectable roof, and a life beyond the reach of the man she left in London. A remote Highland castle seems an excellent place to begin again.

For once, the choice is hers
She had not expected freedom to feel quite so much like courage.
There are mountains she has never imagined, lochs that hold the whole sky, and roads where nobody knows her name. For the first time, Meredith lets herself want an adventure. When the last innkeeper warns her against the walk to Dunmore, she goes anyway. Whether that is bravery or plain stubbornness rather depends upon the weather.

Balmorrow
Meredith reaches Dunmore with a fever, a furious cat, and a letter of introduction. The duke informs her there is no position. She would argue the point—if she could remain standing.

A most unwilling host
The Duke of Dunmore has no use for company. Still less for a woman who will not do as she is told.
Scarred by war and accustomed to being obeyed, he has shut himself away from the world. He intends to remain there. But Meredith questions his manners, refuses to be frightened of his temper, and is altogether too distracting. He can order her to rest. Persuading himself to stop thinking about her proves considerably more difficult.

An inconvenient arrival. An impossible longing.
He thinks she has come to the wrong door.
He has no idea that the woman on his doorstep will become the one person he cannot bear to lose. Meredith has learned what it costs to depend upon a gentleman. The duke has sworn never to need anyone again. Neither is prepared for the inconvenience of wanting the other to stay.

Chapter One · An excerpt

“Well, Meredith, you have really done it now.”
Wind drove the rain beneath my bonnet and pressed my wet skirts against my legs. Tolly shifted inside the basket under my cloak, and the road ahead had disappeared into grey.
An hour earlier, Balmorrow had still seemed perfectly manageable.
